Wale - "Ambitious Girl" [New Music]

Some new music from Wale has been released & I must say that I wasn't expecting this song to be like this. I knew it would be worth the listen but, I wasn't ready for the delivery Wale had. It's very intimate, if that makes sense, and Wale talks about how he rather wants [for a lack of better words] an ambitious girl versus a girl that has none. I LOVE this song, and it is really needed right now w/ all the foolishness happening today. I'm just glad it was Wale to do this. I mean who else would do it better--really?! I just hope this on his new mixtape, More About Nothing, which drops August 3rd!

"See these bxtches can't cut in yo business, I'm in love with your business,

And your productivity is the reason I interest, ambitious girl,

See, I like the person that you are,

But I'm in love with the person that you have potential to be."

Wiz Khalifa Is MTV2's "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010"

Finally, all the votes have been tallied. Both the Hip-Hop heads & artists have spoken. The Co-signs have been addressed, and a decision was announced Sunday, July 25th, on Sucker Free Summit. Wiz Khalifa has been voted as the "Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010"! He definitely deserved this & I'm sure the Taylor Gang had EVERYTHING to do with his win, which is amazing.

What were the conditions? Who was he going up against?
First off, the contestants for this contest could not have been signed to a major label, and could not have won the title previously. So, as dope as Drake is, he couldn't have won if he tried. Other artists that were in the running were J.Cole, Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, Nipsey Hussle, Curren$y, Waka Flocka, Yelawolf, Jay Electronica, Diggy Simmons, Tyga & more. So, competition was stiff--a lot of talent was on the line! But, he pulled through so CONGRATS to Wiz!! Do your thang boi.

Wiz's words via his twitter: "im str8. my career has never been based on accolades, but i wish they wlda shown the taylors more love...yall built this! " [@Realwizkhalifa]

Soul Food: Dawn Richard Dares to "Fly HIGH & Dream BIG"

"I DARE you to open your mind to something different because when we allow ourselves to do that is when we allow ourselves to be free. It took me a long time to realize that, and I'm just starting to feel comfortable with being free." [Dawn]

This entire video is beautiful--from Dawn's insightful words of encouragement to the way it was shot. I felt even more inspired after watching this.

I also, didn't know Dawn had a blog [here]. It's brand spanking new too!

Let's BE the CHANGE we want to see.

Lupe Fiasco - B.M.F (Building Minds Faster) [NEW Music]

"I THINK I'M MALCOM X. MARTIN LUTHER. ADD A KING. ADD A JUNIOR"
[Lupe Fiasco, Building Minds Faster]

Lupe Fiasco has been in the [Hip-Hop] news a lot lately over his album, Lasers. Apparently, the word is that Atlantic Records won't release his album---for what reason, I don't know. I do know there is an on-line protest that many Hip-Hop heads & Hip-Hop artists themselves (Talib Kweli, Big Boi, Big Sean) have signed to get his album released. YOU can sign the petition here too, which has over 11,00 signatures.

On to other RELATED matters...

Lupe released his own version of Rick Ross' Summer hit "B.M.F" (Blowin' Money Fast). Lupe calls his "Building Minds Faster". Listen to it below:

Soul Food: Chrisette Michele is "For Freedom Not For Beauty"

"For Freedom Not For Beauty"

//Excerpt [read full poem here]
"--Sometimes a flower grows when no ones watching.
Sometimes a bird sings and no one hears.
There’s a meadow no one runs on and a cloud no one names.

And what would the sky be with out the sun?
What would the earth be with out its rose?
They’d still be the sky and the Earth.

So perhaps there is a peace in becoming.
Perhaps the meaning is in the experience and not the sight.
Maybe a flower grows because it suffocates under ground.

Whether or not she is always noticed, beauty must become.

She doesn’t look for an eye.
She doesn’t listen for a voice.
She just becomes,
For Freedom Not For Beauty"

Beautiful words by Chrisette. I think people are afraid to go out and take risks, even with their own hair. But, it's just hair and it will grow back. So, when I discovered that she cut her hair I wasn't asking questions. Who cares why---really!? It's her decision and she made it for her own purposes, and in her case---FREEDOM.

one of my recent tweets: "#ifyoureallyknewme U would kno that im a NEW found believer tht HAIR IS JUST HAIR! Its not that serious! Cut it.Shave it. Be Fierce & Do u!"

MTV2's Top Five "Hottest Breakthrough MC" Finalists

Well, it's Friday and all five finalists for MTV2's "Hottest Breakthrough MC" have been announced. What's the BIG deal, you may ask. Do these Emcees win a prize, a record deal, cash? Nah, but, who ever does win will gain even more credibility in the game. The winner is chosen by the fans, people who have been casting their votes in for a month on MTV, and to have people support you in something like this is a kinda like a BIG deal.
Here they are in order of announcement:
1) Nicki Minaj 2) Wiz Khalifia 3) J. Cole
4) Travis Porter 5) Diggy Simmons
Oh, and you're probably wondering why Diggy? Yeah, I would've said the same thing if I didn't know about this right here...
//Diggy's "Made You Look" Freestyle...SICK!!
It's going to be a tough call and I'm cool with anyone that wins to be honest. As long as they keep holding it down with the music, I'm all for it! The FINAL winner will be announced this Sunday, July 25th, at noon on MTV2's "Sucker Free Summit". TUNE IN!

Soul Food: "The Dream"

J. Cole - Intro "The Warm Up"

The Dream
It starts as a fragile, wispy thing that might float right on by unnoticed. Except, it snags on something within your soul and lodges there. And then you start to feel it. Yes, it feels good. But it also hurts. It aches, because you desperately long to bring it to life.

So, caught in between that wonderful vision of what can be, and that painful realization of what has not yet been fulfilled, you know you've got to do something about it. And your passion begins to build. And that makes you want it even more. It begins to gnaw at you, urging you constantly to do something, do something, do something about it.

With a determination that you just can't deny, you take the first step. And it feels good. It feels powerful. And though you don't even know what the next step will be, you resolve to figure it out, and you do, and you take that next step, and the next. Driven forward by pure, raw desire, you refuse to listen to those who tell you it can't be done.

And though you get knocked around relentlessly, still you find a way, a way to get back up and run, ride, walk or crawl forward, whatever it takes, every time. Because it's your dream. It's your purpose. It's what you're here to do. It's your gift to give to all that is. You know, beyond knowing, that you must.

With a power you feel in every fiber of your being, but cannot fully explain, you bring the dream to life. And the joy of fulfillment is more intense than you ever could have imagined.

Rick Ross Gets Burned in "Teflon Don" Album Review

Rick Ross' album, Teflon Don, dropped yesterday. I previewed the album on his official Myspace & thought it was worth the $10 so, I added it to the collection. It's not a bad album by any means, but, it's understandable that NOT everyone feels the same way.

As I was searching for a review of his album, I came across this one here, which completely destroys his album. The article addresses Ross' lyrical ability, [or lack there-of] a number of times, often stating that his features upstaged him on his own tracks. But when you have features like Jay, Kanye, and even Drake, what do you expect to happen?! With artists like that you better spit your hardest or risk being outshined outdone on your song.

Let's get into the heat!!
1. The Similarity of "Blowin' Money Fast" and "MC Hammer":
*I noticed this similarity myself even before reading this article. I was listening to "MC Hammer" and couldn't help but, realize that it sounds like another "BMF". I looked at the CD booklet, & discovered they are produced by the same producer, Lex Luger. I then said to myself, "If I was him, I wouldn't have chose both of those".

Article BURNS to say about "BMF"....["Um..yes, ‘glitzy fairy tales’ that only grew more fantastical by the bar to the point of utter hilarity as evidenced on the Earth-rattling banger “B.M.F (Blowin’ Money Fast)” where he thirstily attaches his legacy to notorious criminals Big Meech & Larry Hoover."]

2. "No. 1" feat. Trey Songz x Diddy:
First of all, Diddy takes over this song as he usually does w/ any other song. But, I think this song could have been left off myself. Second thought: Then the album would be down to just 10 tracks, so nevermind. Keep the filler.

Article BURNS to say...[--“No. 1” which definitely should’ve been Track #11 on the oft-delayed Dirty Money album, not Track #7 on the year’s ‘most-anticipated’ album."] WOW!

3. The Missing Case of Lyrical Substance:
Article BURNS to say that Ross' substance is a lot better than all of his previous albums but, he still is not immune to the lyrical forces of some of the BEST in the game.
["But, then again, I doubt anyone noticed Ricky’s never-ending flurry of anti-quotables (“If she died on my d*ck she would live through my rhymes”) or cared about T.I., Jada & Erykah’s ‘Maybach irrelevance,’ Gucci Mane’s uber-whack “MC Hammer” verse (“I’m MC Hammer…I put dat on my Gran’ma”) (or) Chrisette & Raphael Saadiq’s wasted talents due to the album’s impeccable production quality."]

How does the Article rate Teflon Don???
The writer closes with this to say the album "--won’t receive anything higher than 2.3/4 Stars from me for an overhyped, overrated, overdebated ‘audio movie experience’ with (again) no heart, substance or timeless appeal."
WELL DAMN!!

I still think the album is good for what it is. Sure, he gets "showed up" on his own songs but, the album is a good addition to the collection. But, this just goes to show you that my ears aren't everything.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON TEFLON DON???

T.I. x B.O.B on COMPLEX Magazine Cover

T.I says "I'm Back" by gracing the cover of the August/September 2010 issue of COMPLEX, with his artist B.O.B.. It comes out August 10th.

Personally, I love their energy. Very animated they are.
Click here to read T.I. & B.O.B's interview, and also watch the Behind-the-scenes video.

//EXCERPTS:
Complex: You told Larry King you're a "retired gangster." Does that limit what you can rap about creatively?

T.I.: "Nah. I can rap about guns in the context in which I need to rap about them. I could rap about the past. I can rap about not needing a gun. I can rap about other ways of doing things if that's what I choose to rap about. I can't change who I am on the inside. That'll shine through with no gun, no drugs. Fundamentally, who I am and what I stand for is still the same."

Complex: Can you really be an underdog when you've got T.I. and Jim Jonsin co-signing you?
B.o.B.: "You can't make people like your music, you know what I mean? You can't make the radio stations play your song. I could have Obama on my side but if the fans don't like it, they won't really listen. [Laughs.]"

For Laughs: Day 26's Willie Hilarious Car Conversation w/ Wife

OH EM GEE...So, I was on Youtube [as I usually am], & I came across this video of Willie [Day 26] & his wife in the car. I clicked to watch it, thinking it would be a regular casual conversation in the car. Well I was WRONG! Think in terms of Martin & Gina b/c they are crazy [in a good way]. But you can tell they love each other though.
Watch as they playfully joke in the car, curse each other out, and sing songs....all in fun!
I laughed so hard watching this, it doesn't make sense.

*WARNING: There is A LOT of cursing.

Guess Who Is Crushing on Trey Songz x His New Song "I Want You"

Gabourey Sidebe admits that she a crush on Trey, but c'mon who doesn't?!

In an interview with People magazine she states, "I’m super crushing on Trey Songz.--I used to listen to his music when I worked in an office, and when I met him a few weeks ago, I couldn't contain my excitement."

What did she say when she finally met him??
Sidibe: "Now that we go to the same events, you think I’m cool, right? Do you want to date? We could just get married!'" <<--Haha, that's cute!
On another note, Trey has a new song out called, "I Want You".
*I wonder if this is how Sidibe feels, ha! Take a listen below.

*Also look out for Trey on the song "No. 1", which is on Rick Ross' album Teflon Don out tomorrow.

Drake's Interview Outtakes with Paper Magazine

Drake always seems to be down to Earth & he's always on his "cool, calm & collected" bit, which I admire about him. Paper Magazine did an interview with him in June but, left out some interesting outtakes released today. Check it out below:

//Drake: "I have an extreme desire to get back into acting and I've been in conversations non-stop about what kind of projects I'm going to pick, who I'd like to work with and things of that nature."

He states that he doesn't want to do the "basketball movie" or "typical black film" but, would actually love to do the Barak Obama story, should it get the greenlight...

//Drake: "I hope somebody makes a movie about Obama's life soon because I could play him. That's the goal [laughs]. I watch all the addresses. Anytime I see him on TV, I don't change the channel, I definitely pay attention and listen to the inflections of his voice. If you ask anyone who knows me, I'm pretty good at impressions." [Hmm, that would be interesting.]

He refuses to lose his cool in any situation...

//Drake: "I wake up and I'm scared to flip my phone over because I don't know what songs have leaked or what girl has said what about me. I don't let it show because I care too much about the people around me and I need them to feel like I'm solid."

Other interesting tid-bits:
#1: Drake admits that he stopped going on the computer [I guess he Twitters by phone], due to the negativity out on the web. He says if even 100 people said all positive things about his music and [just] one person said anything negative, his attention would focus on that one comment. And he states it's a common problem. I just think it goes to show how passionate he is about his work.--> "Negativity hurts us more than positivity helps us." - Drake

#2: He had a shrine "dedicated" to Andre 3000 made, which he still has in his apartment today. It's a door covered with verses from the Outkast rapper himself. DOPE!

You can check out more of the interview outtakes in the article, "Drake on Overexposure, Staying off the Internet and Playing Obama", here.

Read the full article, "Dream Date", from Paper Magazine, here. It talks about February 13, 2009, the day that practically changed Drake's life [release of So Far Gone mixtape] & his rise to where he is now in the game. It's a pretty good read.

Even by watching his MTV documentary, Better Than Good Enough, you can tell how bad he wants it. I really admire the fact that he is constantly improving himself and very critical of his work. I respect the fact that he puts effort and thought into his verses, and is always trying to deliver the best verse he can. I digg it.

Mr. Rozay, Teflon Don, & Biggie?

You think your who--Big Meech? Larry Hover?
Rick Ross has been getting a lot of buzz lately. With two super hott singles, "Superfly" and now "Blowin' Money Fast", it's clear that Rick Ross is going to top the charts--Or is it? You be the judge.

//Rick Ross & Biggie, Similar??
Ross raps, "Biggie Smalls in the flesh/Living Life after my Death--" [Tears of Joy]
Read the article "Living Out Notorious B.I.G's Dream" here.

One article pointed out that they shared the same manager [Diddy], wear shades 24/7, used trademark grunts, & if you take the size as factor, I guess you could have something there. *IMO, NEVER.

The other side...[[Diddy also addressed the litany of blogs aimed at him and his association with Rick Ross. “I want to make it clear that I never compared [Rick] Ross to Biggie—there’ll never be another Biggie,” he said. “I feel like [Rick Ross] really just begun. He has a great sense of musicality and he’s from a different space. He’s an exciting artist…and he has a long way to go before he reaches greatness, but he’s on his way."]] [Source - XXL]
...WELL, I guess that clears that up!!

//Album Reviews:
Both Culture Bully & NY Times offers a review of the album. There a lot of features from BIG stars: Drake, Erykah Badu, T.I., Chrisette Michele, Cee-lo, some guy named Jay-Z and more.

Also speaks on hott tracks such as "Free Mason" which Jay-Z lyrically proves once again that he is not the devil---["B----, I’m red hot/I’m on my third six, but a devil I’m not"]. "Tears of Joy" is also dope feat. Cee-lo. Much respect to that introduction by Huey Newton too.

Read more here (Culture Bully) & here (New York Times).

The review fails to rate the album [due to Ross' lack of lyrical substance] but ends..."If you measure the album on its ability to showcase a non-stop flow of tremendously tight beats, mixed in with some consistent contributions from some of today’s biggest names, and capped off by a memorable showing on the mic from The Boss, Teflon Don is scoring high."

Oh yeah, you can also preview the album for FREE [HERE] on Rick Ross' official Myspace. Get your listen & judge for yourself.

*Based off these reviews it's safe to say that "Free Mason" and "Tears of Joy" are bonafide songs. The joint with Kanye is dope too but, that's just me. I've been listening to it and from what I've heard on the preview, it's decent. I think a lot of his beats compensates for his lyrics. Like the track itself is bigger than his lyrical substance. But, that's just me. I would say it's worth the buy though.

//[Ross & Cee-lo working on "Tears of Joy" in the studio]

The album, Teflon Don, will be out this Tuesday, July 20th, 2010.

Amerie Undergoes a Name Change?

Like many stars, Amerie has decided to change her name. But, it's not her actual name she's changing. It's the spelling of her name.

Goodbye Amerie and hello "Ameriie". Why the extra "i"?? She explains below to Rap-Up.com...

"I operate on vibes and intuition,
and I believe everything is energy;
the vibration of the double I is right for me.
Slightly different spelling, completely same pronunciation!
"

Even her Twitter name is changed (ItsAmeriie).

I Can't Stop Listening to...Wiz Khalifa

I discovered this guy, don't hurt me...a few weeks ago. I got the opportunity to be an Orientation Leader at my school to help with the incoming Freshmen. You know, get them familiar with the campus. During one of our meetings, we ended up playing Hangman on the board. One student went up, and his word was "Khalifa". No one guessed it, and I sure didn't because I had NO idea who he was.

To make this short: I went home after Orientation wrapped up, and I saw his name in some one's status on Facebook. The person mentioned, Drake, Big Sean, and Wiz. I had to look him up because I was literally like, "What's the BIG deal?"
...Needless to say, the first video I watched from Wiz was "This Plane". And I've been hooked ever since.

One of my favorite videos and songs from Wiz is "The Statement". It's off of his Kush x Orange Juice mixtape and the cinematography of the video is just dope. Watch it for the first time if you haven't, and AGAIN if you have like me!

I am hook'd.

Soul Food: "Dreaming of Flying"

What I admire most about some celebrities is that they don't forget the concept that is inspiration and what it does to the spirit...Constantly sending the message of following your dreams, to essentially see the bigger picture. And to fight to be in that picture, when it's all said and done. I really, really love that.

Diddy is a man of many titles but, every time I check his Twitter, or see him on television, he is always pushing. For progress, for betterment, for the initial "impossible".
He inspires many, including me.

The screenshot [above] is what I spotted on his very own, Diddy Blog. It made me smile. Sometimes I miss being a kid, and wish that I NEVER lose that side of me. Children have a vision that fades with time. They view everything differently. Very creative, very hopeful, and extremely imaginative. It looks like they are flying doesn't it?

Another insightful piece from his blog:
"What has happened before is over now. Let go of the blame. Let go of the resentment. Feel the goodness that already lives in you. Feel the goodness that lives in life's best possibilities. "
-Ralph Marston

I NEEDED this today. I thought maybe you did too.

Drake Makes "Women Feel Special"

Yet another artist on his grind is "Mr. Find Your Love" better known as Drake. He just released his debut album, Thank Me Later (June 15), and is now working to shoot videos for his next few singles. One of which is for "Fancy" featuring T.I. [produced by Swizz Beats]. You've probably heard, "Oh You Fancy, Huh?" a lot lately...it's all because of Drake.

In a recent interview [below] with MTV.com, Drake says, "It's just to make women feel special" [speaking about the single, "Fancy"]. I would say so, since everyone has been quoting the song like crazy.

Also, As I was browsing I came across this video from the blog, October's Very Own which is mostly dedicated to Drake. The guy definitely shows love to Drake and his album, Thank Me Later, by buying every copy in the store. Now, that's what I call LOVE.

And, according to Drake's Twitter [here] he is already prepping for his NEXT album...ALREADY!

"Started my new album last night too...ok I'm done...miss me video tmrw at 9am...tipsy...maybe? naaaaaaah....maybe tho"

I'm not sure if he was under the influence but, I do know that he is on his grind with that second album!!

Trey Songz feat. Nicki Minaj - "Bottoms Up"

"Bottoms Up" is Trey's first single from his up-coming album, Passion, Pain, Pleasure, which is to drop this Fall.

Sidenote: Why didn't I know Trey was releasing another album so soon?? The man is GRINDIN'...much respect.

#FACT: Nicki kill'd her verse.

Behind-The-Scenes: "Blowin Money Fast"

It's been ALL over the radio and it's clear that this Summer belongs to Rick Ross. Every song thus far has been a hit in my eyes. From the original "Super High" video to the REMIX here with Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa, he is definitely making me want to get his album, Teflon Don. It will be in stores July 20th...right around the corner!

May I ask what on EARTH is SB doing at exactly the 1:50 mark? I guess man.

People can muster up as much depise and hate for Soulja Boy but, this guy is still making his $$$. Is he the most lyrical? No. Is he the best rapper, as some of his DIE-hard fans would state? Well, I will let you decide that for yourselves. Regardless, you have to respect his hustle.

His album, "Dre" is to to drop July 27, 2010.

I ain't mad at ALL.
